Mission 1
Hoodoo Shapes
Spend 5-10 minutes studying the shapes around you. Hoodoos at Bryce Canyon range from a few feet tall to over 200 feet. The different shapes reflect differences in rock hardness, frost exposure, and how long each column has been standing.
Mission 2
Amphitheater View
Use 5-10 minutes to take in the scale. The main Bryce Amphitheater is about three miles across. Count the visible layers of hoodoos, notice how the colors change from rim to canyon floor, and look for trails threading between the spires.
Mission 3
Color Bands
Spend 5-10 minutes tracing the colors. Bryce Canyon's vivid orange and red tones come from iron oxide. Lighter pink and white layers have less iron. Purple shades come from manganese. Each color band was a different environment millions of years ago.
Mission 4
Trail Switchbacks
Use 5-10 minutes to trace the trail. Switchbacks reduce the steepness of a descent or climb by making it longer — you travel more distance but at a gentler grade. Notice how the trail builders chose where to turn to avoid loose rock or unstable slopes.
Mission 5
Ancient Stone
Spend 5-10 minutes with one surface. Notice the texture: is it smooth or rough? Does it have cracks running through it? Do you see any fossils, ripple marks, or ancient current patterns preserved in the stone? Each one tells you something about conditions 50 million years ago.
Mission 6
Pine & Canyon
Use 5-10 minutes to notice the contrast. The rim sits above 8,000 feet — high enough to support forests with ponderosa pine, white fir, and blue spruce. A few hundred feet lower in the canyon, the microclimate shifts and the trees change. The edge between forest and stone is sharp and strange.
Mission 7
Shadow Shapes
Spend 5-10 minutes watching the light. Notice which hoodoos are in full sun and which are in shadow. Notice how shadows define the shapes more clearly — or make them harder to see. Bryce Canyon photographers often arrive at sunrise specifically to catch the orange light hitting the orange stone.

Hoodoo Memory
Use 5-10 minutes to connect everything you noticed: the hoodoo shapes, amphitheater scale, color bands, trail movement, ancient stone, pine edges, and shadow play. One final image carries the whole adventure — choose yours carefully.
