Mission 1
Crossing the Open Ocean
The Seven Mile Bridge stretches across miles of open turquoise water, connecting Marathon to the Lower Keys. As you cross, you're surrounded by ocean in every direction — a reminder that the Florida Keys are a chain of islands linked together by remarkable engineering.
Mission 2
Flagler's Impossible Dream
In the early 1900s, railroad builder Henry Flagler dreamed of connecting the Florida mainland to Key West by rail. Many believed it could not be done, but engineers and thousands of workers built bridges across open ocean to make his vision a reality.
Mission 3
Pigeon Key
Tiny Pigeon Key became a temporary home for hundreds of railroad workers building the Overseas Railroad. The island included homes, kitchens, workshops, and even a small hospital, creating a bustling community in the middle of the ocean.
Mission 4
Building Across the Sea
Constructing bridges over deep water more than 100 years ago required incredible planning, specialized equipment, and determination. Workers battled waves, storms, heat, and isolation to build the railroad one section at a time.

Two Bridges, One Story
The original bridge carried trains across the Keys. Today's modern Seven Mile Bridge carries cars, while parts of the historic railroad bridge remain beside it as a reminder of Florida's transportation history.
Mission 6
The Hurricane of 1935
On Labor Day in 1935, one of the strongest hurricanes ever to strike the United States devastated the Florida Keys and severely damaged the Overseas Railroad. The railroad never reopened, and many of its bridges were later converted into the Overseas Highway.

Where Two Waters Meet
The Florida Keys separate the deep blue Atlantic Ocean from the calmer waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Standing on or near the bridge gives visitors a unique chance to appreciate the geography that makes the Keys unlike anywhere else in the United States.
