8 missions at Grand Canyon & Falls
Mission 1
Yellow Rock, Blue Water
Look for a viewpoint where you can see both the stained canyon walls and the river far below. Try to show the vivid color contrast — yellow-orange rock against blue-green water.
Mission 2
Upper Falls First
Look for the Upper Falls viewpoint, accessible from the South Rim or the brink trail. Photograph the waterfall itself — try to show where the river compresses and accelerates before dropping.
Mission 3
The Lower Falls
Use one of the canyon rim viewpoints — Artist Point, Lookout Point, or the Brink — to frame the Lower Falls. Try to capture the scale of the drop relative to the canyon walls around it.
Mission 4
Artist Point
Follow the South Rim trail to Artist Point — a short walk from the parking area. Photograph the classic view down the canyon toward the Lower Falls. This is considered one of the finest viewpoints in the national park system.

How Deep Is This
Find a rim viewpoint where you can see both the canyon edge near you and the river far below. Try to frame the shot so the scale of the drop is clear — the canyon is between 800 and 1,200 feet deep.
Mission 6
Osprey Above the Falls
Look at the sheer canyon walls near the Upper and Lower Falls for osprey nests on rock ledges, or watch the river for birds diving after cutthroat trout. Osprey are large brown and white birds with distinctive bent-wing silhouettes in flight.
Mission 7
North Rim Drive
Each North Rim viewpoint shows the canyon from a completely different angle. Photograph the canyon from any North Rim stop. The Brink of the Lower Falls requires a steep descent but puts you at the edge of the waterfall itself.
Mission 8
The Canyon Keeps Cutting
Walk the rim trail and look for signs of ongoing erosion. Fresh rock faces that haven't weathered to yellow yet, crumbling rim edges, or rock piles at the base of the canyon walls all show that the canyon is still growing.
