8 missions at Mammoth Hot Springs
Mission 1
Terraces From Above
Walk to the upper terrace area or find an overlook above the main terraces. Photograph downward so multiple levels of white travertine are visible, showing the staircase pattern.
Mission 2
Limestone Beneath
Look for the layered, smooth white stone near an active terrace edge. Stay on the boardwalk and photograph the travertine surface — look for the crusty, rough texture where new material is being deposited.
Mission 3
Colors of Life
Look for the vivid colored bands running through the white terraces. Try to capture where the colors change from bright orange near the hot source to cooler green or brown farther away — each color is a different community of bacteria living at a different temperature.
Mission 4
Palette Spring
Walk the lower terrace boardwalk and look for the Palette Spring marker. The spring continuously flows over the terrace below, painting it with vivid orange, yellow, and green bands side by side. Photograph the colored flow.
Mission 5
Bighorn on the Cliffs
Scan the steep rocky outcrops above and around the terraces slowly — bighorn sheep blend into the rock color but look for movement or curved horns. They often stand on near-vertical faces that would be impossible for most animals.
Mission 6
The River Below
Walk to the northern edge of the terrace area and look down toward the Gardner River canyon. The town of Gardiner, Montana is visible just outside the park gate — you're looking at the northern boundary of Yellowstone.
Mission 7
Elk in the Town
The elk herd at Mammoth treats the village as their territory year-round. Look on the lawns, paths, and parking areas. Maintain a safe distance — these are wild animals regardless of how relaxed they appear.
Mission 8
Oldest Place in the Park
Walk through the park headquarters area and look for the sturdy stone buildings — they look older and more formal than modern park facilities. These are the original fort buildings from the 1880s, still used as administrative offices today.
