   Mission 1

   The Oldest City Under the City

   The Gothic Quarter of Barcelona sits on top of a Roman city called Barcino, founded around 10 BC — meaning the streets you are walking follow paths laid out by Roman engineers over 2,000 years ago. Sections of the original Roman walls built in the 3rd and 4th centuries AD are still standing in several places, incorporated into medieval and modern buildings as if the city simply grew around them rather than replacing them. Barcelona is one of the few cities in Europe where you can touch Roman stonework that has been continuously part of the urban fabric for 1,700 years.

   Mission 2

   The Roman Walls

   The best-preserved section of Barcelona's Roman walls runs along Plaça de Ramon Berenguer el Gran — a stretch of 4th century Roman defensive wall incorporating watchtowers that still stands to its original height in places. The wall was built using stone blocks taken from earlier Roman structures — you can see recycled decorative elements and inscriptions of older buildings embedded in the defensive wall that replaced them. Medieval builders then built directly on top of the Roman wall, creating a layered sandwich of Roman, medieval, and later construction.

   Mission 3

   The Cathedral of Barcelona

   The Barcelona Cathedral was built primarily between 1298 and 1448 on the site of a Roman temple, a Visigothic cathedral, and a Romanesque church. The Gothic facade that visitors see today was not completed until 1913 — nearly 500 years after the main body of the building was finished. The cathedral's cloister contains 13 white geese that have lived there continuously for centuries, one for each year of Saint Eulalia's life when she was martyred by the Romans in the 4th century.

   Mission 4

   The Geese of Saint Eulalia

   Saint Eulalia is the co-patron saint of Barcelona — a 13-year-old Christian girl who according to tradition was subjected to 13 tortures before being crucified in the 4th century AD. Her remains are kept in the cathedral crypt. The 13 white geese in the cloister are her living memorial — one for each year of her life and each torture she endured. On the feast day of Saint Eulalia on February 12th the geese are decorated with ribbons and paraded through the Gothic Quarter.

   Mission 5

   Plaça Reial

   Plaça Reial is a grand neoclassical plaza hidden just off Las Ramblas behind an archway — a complete surprise after the medieval tangle of streets surrounding it. The lamp posts in the square were designed by a young Antoni Gaudí in 1879 — one of his first public commissions, completed before he developed his distinctive organic style. They are sleek and classical, recognizable as Gaudí only by the winged helmets of Mercury at their tops.

   Mission 6

   The Hidden Plazas

   Plaça de Sant Felip Neri is a small square with a 17th century church and pockmarks in the church walls that are bullet holes from a Francoist air raid in 1938 that killed 42 civilians sheltering in the square, mostly children from a nearby school. The holes have never been filled. The square is one of the quietest and most affecting places in Barcelona — a few seconds walk from the tourist crowds of the cathedral and completely empty most of the time.

   Mission 7

   The Jewish Quarter

   Within the Gothic Quarter lies El Call — the medieval Jewish quarter, one of the oldest and most significant Jewish communities in medieval Europe. The Jewish community of Barcelona flourished for 500 years before being destroyed in the pogrom of 1391 when a mob killed hundreds and forced the survivors to convert. The community never recovered and was formally expelled from Spain along with all Jews in 1492. Several buildings contain Hebrew inscriptions and a small museum marks the site of the medieval synagogue.

   Mission 8

   Two Thousand Years of Walking

   Walking through the Gothic Quarter in 2026 means following paths that have been walked continuously for over 2,000 years — Roman citizens, Visigothic kings, medieval merchants, Inquisition officials, anarchist revolutionaries, Civil War refugees, and millions of tourists have all navigated the same narrow lanes between the same stone walls. In a world where most urban fabric is replaced within a generation or two, the Gothic Quarter is a reminder that cities can be genuinely ancient.
