   Mission 1

   The Boy Who Drew Everything

   Pablo Picasso arrived in Barcelona in 1895 as a 13-year-old boy when his father took a position at the city's fine arts school. Picasso was so extraordinarily talented that he completed the school's entrance examination — normally given a month to complete — in a single day. The Picasso Museum was established in 1963 at Picasso's own suggestion — he proposed donating his early work to the city and asked that it be housed in the medieval palaces of the Born neighborhood he had wandered as a teenager.

   Mission 2

   The Medieval Palaces

   The Picasso Museum occupies five connected medieval palaces on Carrer de Montcada built in the 14th and 15th centuries by Barcelona's merchant aristocracy who made their fortunes in Mediterranean trade. Walking through the museum means walking through the architecture as much as the art — the medieval courtyards, vaulted ceilings, and stone arches are inseparable from the experience of seeing Picasso's early work displayed within them.

   Mission 3

   Las Meninas

   The most extraordinary room in the Picasso Museum contains his 58-painting series based on Velázquez's 1656 masterpiece Las Meninas. In 1957 Picasso locked himself in his studio for three and a half months and produced 58 variations on the Velázquez painting, taking it apart, rebuilding it, reducing it to cubist geometry, and reimagining it in every possible way. Picasso wasn't imitating Velázquez — he was having an argument with him across 300 years.

   Mission 4

   Carrer de Montcada

   Carrer de Montcada — the street where the Picasso Museum stands — was built in the 14th century as the most prestigious address in medieval Barcelona. The street is only 200 meters long but contains a higher concentration of Gothic and Renaissance merchant palaces than almost any other street in Europe — palace after palace built by families who grew rich on Mediterranean trade with the Catalan-Aragonese Empire that once stretched from Barcelona to Athens.

   Mission 5

   El Born Market

   The El Born Market — a spectacular 19th century iron market hall — was selected as the site of a new library in 2001. During demolition work, archaeologists discovered something extraordinary beneath the floor — the preserved ruins of an entire neighborhood destroyed by the Bourbon army in 1714, when Barcelona was besieged and the Born neighborhood was demolished to build a military citadel. The library plan was abandoned, the ruins were preserved, and the iron market hall now shelters one of the most important archaeological sites in Catalonia.

   Mission 6

   The Basílica de Santa Maria del Mar

   The Basílica de Santa Maria del Mar is considered the finest Gothic church in Catalonia — built entirely between 1329 and 1383, a remarkably short 54 years for a medieval cathedral, giving it an architectural consistency that buildings constructed over centuries rarely achieve. It was built by the people of the Ribera neighborhood — maritime merchants, sailors, and fishermen — who carried the stones for its construction on their backs from a quarry outside the city as a voluntary labor of devotion.

   Mission 7

   El Born Today

   El Born has undergone the classic cycle of Barcelona urban transformation — medieval splendor, decline, working class tenements, artist colonization in the 1990s, and rapid gentrification in the 2000s. Today it is one of the most fashionable neighborhoods in Barcelona, its narrow medieval streets lined with independent boutiques, natural wine bars, and restaurants that have made it the center of Barcelona's contemporary food culture.

   Mission 8

   What Barcelona Made Picasso

   The early work in the Picasso Museum shows an artist of extraordinary technical skill who had not yet become Picasso. Barcelona in the 1890s was a hotbed of avant-garde ideas, Catalan nationalism, anarchist politics, and artistic experimentation. The Blue Period was directly inspired by his experience of Barcelona's poor, and the beginning of Cubism grew from ideas he first encountered in the city's artistic circles. Barcelona didn't just house Picasso — it made him.
