   Mission 1

   Still Being Built

   The Sagrada Família has been under continuous construction since 1882 — making it the longest continuously active construction project in the world. Antoni Gaudí took over as chief architect in 1883 and devoted the last 43 years of his life to it, living on site in his workshop for the final years before he was struck by a tram in 1926 and died three days later. The building has been under construction for longer than the Eiffel Tower has existed and is now expected to be completed in 2026 — 144 years after it began.

2. 

   Mission 2

   Nature in Stone

   Gaudí designed the Sagrada Família using nature as his primary architectural model — the columns inside branch like trees, the ceiling vaults spread like a forest canopy, and the facades are covered in organic forms derived from plants, insects, and geological formations. He believed that straight lines belonged to humans while curved lines belonged to God and nature. The branching column system inside is mathematically derived from the way trees distribute load, allowing the interior to be filled with light rather than the thick walls and flying buttresses that traditional Gothic cathedrals required.

   Mission 3

   The Nativity Facade

   The Nativity Facade is the only facade completed under Gaudí's direct supervision — a cascading surface of stone carved with over 100 sculptural figures. Gaudí was so committed to naturalistic accuracy that he used plaster casts of real people — including a hunchback, a recently deceased child, and animals from the Barcelona zoo — as the basis for his figures. Gaudí considered it a visual catechism — a complete story told in stone for people who couldn't read.

   Mission 4

   Inside the Forest

   Walking into the interior of the Sagrada Família is one of the most disorienting architectural experiences in the world — the branching stone columns spread into the ceiling like an enormous forest canopy and the kaleidoscopic stained glass windows fill the space with colored light that shifts as the sun moves. The stained glass was designed to create specific color temperatures on each side — warm golden and amber light from the west, cool blue and green light from the east — filling the building with what feels like weather rather than just decoration.

   Mission 5

   The Passion Facade

   The Passion Facade tells the story of the crucifixion in a deliberately stark and brutal style that contrasts completely with the ornate naturalism of the Nativity Facade. Hidden in the facade is a magic square — a grid of 16 numbers that adds up to 33 in every direction, horizontally, vertically, diagonally, and in four quadrants — 33 being the age of Jesus at his crucifixion. Finding it is one of the great small puzzles of the Sagrada Família.

   Mission 6

   The Towers

   The Sagrada Família will eventually have 18 towers representing Jesus, the Virgin Mary, the four Evangelists, and the twelve Apostles. The tallest tower will reach 172.5 meters when completed — one meter shorter than the nearby Montjuïc hill, because Gaudí believed that human creation should not surpass the work of God. The towers already completed are climbable by elevator and offer the finest elevated view of Barcelona available.

   Mission 7

   Who Is Paying for This

   The Sagrada Família is funded entirely by visitor entrance fees — it receives no government funding and never has. The modern construction is funded by approximately 4.5 million visitors who pay to enter each year. For most of its history the building operated without a building permit — the original permit from 1882 applied to a different architect's design and the city of Barcelona only resolved the building's legal status in 2019, granting a formal permit 137 years after construction began.

8. 

   Mission 8

   Gaudí's City

   Antoni Gaudí is buried in the crypt of the Sagrada Família — the building he devoted his life to and never saw completed. He was beatified by the Catholic Church in 2010, the first step toward possible sainthood. When he died in 1926 — initially unrecognized after being struck by a tram because his clothes were so worn that passersby assumed he was a beggar — thousands of Barcelonans lined the streets for his funeral procession. Standing in front of the Sagrada Família in 2026, you are at the completion of something he began in 1883 and never lived to see.
